Dreamweaving in St.Louis
Cardinals acquired RHP Jeff Weaver and cash considerations from the Angels from outfielder Terry Evans. Rotoworld: A return to the Dodgers might have been even better, but we're optimistic that Weaver will have considerable fantasy value the rest of the way. He'll also be pretty useful to the Cardinals, though he's not someone who can necessarily be counted on in a playoff game. His arrival should bump Sidney Ponson from the St. Louis rotation, if not the roster entirely. My Suggestion - 2nd Half sleeper pick

Gagne sent to Hospital
Eric Gagne was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday with pain in his lower back and is expected to remain overnight. Gagne still hasn't begun a throwing program that he initially was scheduled to start last Friday, and it's believed his back pain is unrelated to any baseball activity. He's scheduled to be examined by Dr. Robert Watkins and more should be known about his condition on Thursday. IMHO - Drop him

Reds Pitcher Shackleford Arrested
Brian Shackelford was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. Shackelford was arrested leaving Miller Park following Wednesday's game. Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz declined to provide details on the arrest other than to say it involved a woman Monday. The Reds said they would not discuss the case because of pending legal proceedings. "We recognize the seriousness of the matter and do not condone behavior of the type alleged," the team said in a statement.

Yzerman announces retirement
DETROIT (CP) - The unbreakable will and desire that made Steve Yzerman one of the greatest NHL players in history told him to play one more season. The knee worn down after 22 years of hockey at its highest level told him it simply wasn't possible, at least not at the level he wanted. It left Yzerman no choice but to officially announce his retirement on Monday and bring an end to a playing career that made him one of the most respected men in hockey. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=170385&hubname=nhl

Big Ben in Motorcycle Accident
Ben Roethlisberger is expected to start throwing next week for the first time since being injured in a motorcycle accident. In his recovery from head and jaw injuries, Big Ben's strength and stability will be key factors in his quest to return sooner rather than later. The Steelers will not rush Roethlisberger back, a source said, and are fully prepared to keep him on the sidelines for Week 1 vs. Miami.

Summer NBA Deals 2006
The Lakers were able to persuad forward Vladimir Radmanovic to leave the Clippers and join the other team in L.A. on Saturday. The Hornets made the first big news of the NBA's free-agent signing period, agreeing to terms Saturday with forward Peja Stojakovic. Stojakovic, who last week opted to become a free agent instead of continue playing for Indiana, will sign a five-year deal worth about $64 million with the Hornets Jason Terry and the Mavericks have agreed on a six-year contract. His agent said Terry accepted a "hometown discount" to stay, but considering it's a six-year deal and Mark Cuban, we're sure Terry is doing just fine. Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets have agreed on a five-year, $80 million max contract to be signed later this month. Anthony will officially sign the deal July 12th, but his agent said he never considered leaving Denver. He will play out the final year of his rookie deal in 2006-2007 before the extension kicks in. The Raptors signed Andrea Bargnani, the No. 1 overall pick, to a multi-year deal on Saturday. Under the NBA's rookie scale, Bargnani will make $7.78 million in the first two years of the deal that runs through 2007-08. The Raptors also hold club options for the next two years of the contract. The Clippers have offered Sam Cassell, last season's co-captain and emotional leader, a two-year deal that could be worth as much as $12 million. That might be enough to keep him with the Clippers next season, although it's unknown whether he or Shaun Livingston would be the starter.

Jayden Odom died Wednesday night, apparently suffocating while sleeping in his crib in New York, according to John Black. "Lamar is very distraught," Black said. "Both he and the baby's mother are asking that people respect their privacy at this time." Jayden was born Dec. 15. Odom has two older children -- a son and a daughter.
