Posted June 10, 200619 yr comment_6946 Currently everyone logs in with a login name, but display names (which show in topics) are separate. I personally think this may confuse people if they change their display names eventually. Here are options: 1. Keep it how it is. Once you get to a certain number of posts you can change your display name in your controls. That will not change your login name though. So you could get confused. 2. Log in with your email address. You still would be able to change your display name (once you are allowed to), but in this case you probably will be less confused... because you won't forget your email address regardless of your display name. 3. Don't even use display names at all. Then your login name and display name are both automatically the same. You will never forget them. HOWEVER you can not change them yourself... ever. I would have to, which would be annoying for you and me both.
June 12, 200619 yr Author comment_6982 I am aware of that. It is least likely to be changed to that though because then people can't change their own names. I am trying to see what people think and it matters though, but I am unsure if I would go to that option or not. It really is the one I like least of the 3 personally. I personally think email addresses would work best of the 3.
June 12, 200619 yr comment_6983 Well email address might work ok. The problem I would have is that If I ever forget my password, I wouldnt even know what email address I use. If I do join a foum I always use throw-away email addresses so I don't get any extra junk mail.
June 12, 200619 yr comment_6984 Leave it IMO. Email addresses are usually long and would be an extreme annoyance. If people aren't smart enough to remember their login id, then they shouldn't change their usernames to something different. And if they do forget, they could access their name history and see what it was in the beginning. But since I'm not a regular poster here, I guess it doesn't matter what I think.
June 12, 200619 yr Author comment_6986 I think the name history is only for display names though, not login names. In the rules at registration I point out they can make both names the same if they will forget. But then say they want to change their display name later, then is when they may get confused. If someone for whatever weird reason wants to constantly change them. If I keep it how it is, people really should make their login name something they use on other sites where they dont forget it.
