Cubs re-signed RHP Kerry Wood to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.

According to MLB.com, the incentives in the deal aren't worth $6 million, but can instead bring the value to the deal up to $6 million. So, they're worth $4.25 million. The official breakdown still isn't available, but the incentives are based on active time on the 25-man roster, appearances and games finished, which further emphasizes how Wood will be used next season. The Cubs might let him contend for the closer's role whether they trade Ryan Dempster or not.

Cubs signed infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa, who had been with the Rangers, to a three-year, $13 million contract.

According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Rays have won the bidding for Akinori Iwamura.

The Yakult Swallows will likely make it official on Wednesday or Thursday. Iwamura makes a lot of sense for Tampa Bay. He can start at third base over B.J. Upton or play second base, with Jorge Cantu moving to first. There are significant doubts about his power will play in the U.S., but he has upside and the Rays were smart to gamble on him.

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Frank Thomas will get a two-year, $23 million contract from the Blue Jays.

and on the Rumor side;

The Padres are displaying interest in free agent Barry Bonds, sources tell FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Agent Jeff Borris won't confirm any specific interest in Bonds, but he's still trying to make it look like everyone wants him. "There are some teams that are being very aggressive in their pursuit of Barry and they're turning up the heat," Borris said. "There are teams that want answers and they want them quickly. There are some owners who have requested meetings with Barry." Bonds could be a huge asset in the middle of San Diego's lineup when healthy. However, if the Padres were really planning to sign him, keeping the right-handed-hitting Ben Johnson as a reserve would have made sense. Maybe they have plans for a superior fourth outfielder.

The Cubs are close to signing Alfonso Soriano, perhaps for as much as $135 million over eight seasons, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Reds and Alex Gonzalez have agreed to terms on a three-year, $14 million contract, pending a physical.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, a rival executive said the White Sox are about to trade Jon Garland.

Interesting. Freddy Garcia, Javier Vazquez and Mark Buehrle were all coming up in rumors more than Garland, who is owed $22 million over the next two years and then will be a free agent. Rosenthal is guessing that Garland is on his way to Texas, with John Danks perhaps involved in the deal. The White Sox are also believed to be interested in relievers Akinori Otsuka and Nick Masset. A Garland trade would clear the way for Brandon McCarthy to join the rotation.

The cubs would finally have something good in him if they could ever keep their pitching healthy, aramis healthy, and lee healthy. And they have pierre too (I think, isnt he still a cub?) so they could be good. Wood probably will be the closer, I am guessing.

Soriano could possibly warrant being drafted first in the draft next year by playing at a good ballpark.
